There are two kinds of gasoline powered generators: regular and inverter types.

If you are planning to run lights, power a space heater, or use simple power tools, and cost is a factor, a regular generator will meet your needs just fine. However, if you need to power a TV, computer, or microwave oven—actually anything with a micro processor—then you will want an inverter generator.

The biggest difference between the two is that a regular generator takes raw power directly from the alternator, while inverters clean the power, producing a pure sine wave, that's often more refined than the commercial power you get from a household outlet. Also the engine's RPM is matched with the power load, instead of maintaining a steady high RPM as in convention generators. This means when the power load is low the engine slows down and doesn't use as much fuel, greatly extending total run time on a tank of gas., as well as reducing wear and tear on the motor.

You will also find that inverter generators usually are quieter.

Now a word about quality. I have looked at a lot of generators. The higher priced ones are usually name brands. You will get a good machine, but you will also pay for it. And usually they are noisier. There are a few lower priced ones that people seem to appreciate. So quality does not always come with a higher price tag.

The bottom line is to do your homework. Read the specs and see if they meet your needs, then compare different brands. If you choose wisely you will have a generator serving you for many years to come.
